According to the New York City Department of Transportation the number of people that are commuting by bicycle has double since 2005. With the introduction of Cite Bike program in May 2013, its current expansion of the program into Brooklyn, Long Island and Queens and the city’s goal of doubling the number of Citi Bikes to 12,000 by 2017, the amount of individuals that commute by bicycle is set to increase drastically.
The increasing number of commuter cyclists brings an added risk to a city and the tristate area that is congested with traffic and may not have the safest transportation infrastructure set up for bicyclists. In 2013 alone, there were 4,269 reported bicyclist injuries in New York City and 13 fatalities. Brooklyn is reported to be the most dangerous borough with almost half (1,574) of reported bicycle accidents and fatalities (6) occurring there in 2013. Manhattan is not far behind with 1,176 reported bicycle injuries in 2013 and 3 bicycle fatalities (nyc.gov). According to the same report 3,884 of NYC’s bicyclist injuries and 12 of the bicyclist fatalities in 2013 involved a crash with a motor vehicle.
Bicycle related injuries can be particularly devastating especially if the accident involved a motor vehicle. Wearing a helmet is often not enough to prevent head trauma to the victims and motorists often do not respect the bicycle lane. Those injured in a bicycle maybe entitled to a No-Fault claim up to 50,000 and additional claims if they were struck by a motor vehicle. If you or a loved one has been injured while riding a bicycle because of someone else’s negligence you or your loved one may be entitled to damages including loss wages and pain and suffering.
