New Seatbelt law in Effect in NY

On November 1st, a new seatbelt law went into effect in New York State. The new law requires that all passengers in the backseat of a vehicle must wear a seat belt. The law not only extends to personal vehicles but includes ride-sharing services as well.

Before the law went into effect, any passenger over the age of 16 in New York was not required to wear a seatbelt if they sat in the backseat. New York will join 30 other states that have similar seatbelt laws.

The goal of the law is to save lives as 30% of highway deaths in New York involved a passenger that was not wearing a seatbelt. While the new law will hopefully save lives it will likely not reduce car accidents and consequently, it may not reduce injury or pain caused by car accidents.
